Derek Minus is a barrister-at-law and a dispute resolution specialist; an Accredited mediator, Chartered arbitrator and Expert determiner.

An advanced and Accredited Mediator since 1992, he has conducted well over 1,000 mediations and conciliations for government panels and private matters. He is an accredited member of the official NSW Rural Assistance Authority farm debt mediation panel. He has worked to assist farmers and people living in rural areas to resolve their disputes since he was first qualified as a Farm Debt mediator in 1997.

As a former member of the NSW Workers Compensation Commission (WCC) for a period of 10 years, he regularly travelled to NSW regional centres, Ballina, Byron Bay, Coolangatta, Tamworth, Dubbo, Orange, Albury, Griffith and Wagga to conducted hearings to resolve disputes and conciliate claims for compensation for farm related injuries.

He has worked directly for the NSW Farmers Association, conducting training and providing advice for Dairy Farmers and their cooperatives in their negotiations with producers, mediated disputes between egg producers on chicken cage regulations and advised on resolving disputes with coal seam gas companies seeking access to farms.

His experience as a lawyer for over 20 years and his experience as a company executive in charge of the financial management of business enterprises, has given him the experience to clearly understand both the legal and financial implications of the decisions that farmers have to make during the mediation process.  He is able to assist farmers and their financial providers, to properly explore all of the options available for the resolution of their dispute.

He has mediations rooms available in the Sydney CBD and regularly travel to country areas to conduct mediations.

Consistent with his expertise in the martial arts, I rate Derek a black belt in the various disciplines of alternate dispute resolution. I have worked with Derek in a number of mediations, involving clients with different agendas and levels of legal sophistication. His flexible approach has proved to be very effective in having all parties fully believe and engage in the process, which sets him apart from most mediators.
